GESD postpones football games due to illness issues
GLOVERSVILLE — The Gloversville Enlarged School District varsity football game at Ballston Spa High School scheduled for Friday and the junior varsity game, scheduled for this morning vs. Ballston Spa, have both been postponed due to two confirmed cases of the Coxsackievirus according to the district.
Both games will be rescheduled to a later date.
According to a press release from the district, a student-athlete and a member of the football staff have contracted the virus, which is contagious. Coxsackievirus can cause fever, headache, and muscle aches, and small blisters to appear on the feet, hands and mouth.
District officials canceled both games in the interest of the health of students and staff, and as a precautionary measure to limit further exposure to the virus, the release states. Individuals diagnosed with a simple Coxsackievirus infection often recover within few days without needing any medical treatment.
The release states the district is taking the necessary steps to clean and disinfect the high school to reduce the opportunity for the virus to spread.
