Transfer station hours to change
JOHNSTOWN — The town of Stratford’s transfer station hours are being changed slightly for the convenience of town residents, the Fulton County Department of Solid Waste says.
Department Deputy Director of Solid Waste/Administration Cindy Livingston reviewed the proposed change at the Board of Supervisors’ Economic Development and Environment Committee meeting Wednesday at the County Office Building.
“The town of Stratford contacted our department about modifying the hours at the station,” Livington said.
Basically, a few hours of operation at the transfer station at Route 29A and County Highway 104 would be earlier, “for the convenience of the residents,” she said. The effective date of institution would be April 2.
Thursday’s hours would be from 3 to 6 p.m., instead of 5 to 8 p.m., so it is lighter out. Sunday hours – during 10 weeks of the summer – would be from 3 to 5 p.m., instead of 5 to 7 p.m.
“We have no problem doing that,” Livingston said.
She said the earlier hours during the summer would especially accommodate campers and tourists.
The committee voted to modify Stratford’s transfer station hours – legislation that will come up for a final board vote on March 12.
In other department business:
∫ The committee granted preliminary authorization to purchase a $145,368 tractor-trailer available through an Onondaga County contract.
“We would like to do a state contract,” said department Director of Solid Waste/Operations David Rhodes.
∫ Supervisors gave preliminary authorization to advertise for bids for a stationary recyclables compactor and conveyor. Bids are due in April, with a bid awarded in May.
“We have $90,000 in the capital plan for this equipment,” Rhodes said.
The compactor and conveyor will be installed in the existing recycling facility for more efficient load out of single stream recyclables for transport out of Fulton County. The equipment will eliminate reloading single stream product, automate the process to save manpower, and bring loading into an enclosed area.
∫ The committee recommended advertising for bids for a bulldozer. The cost has been estimated at $375,000 in the county capital plan. Uses for the machine include bulldozing garbage in the landfill and moving dirt for a variety of landfill projects .
∫ Inhouse modifications to the recycling facility are ongoing. Removed already were: a commingled conveyor and tin magnet, cinder block bays, fencing and six smaller conveyors, a stairway, and a sorting platform.
