Featured artist creates 3-dimensional pieces
GLOVERSVILLE — A meet the artists reception will be held at the Micropolis Cooperative Art Gallery on Friday from 5 to 7 p.m. featuring guest artist Jon Segan of Fort Edward. The gallery is located within the Mohawk Harvest Cooperative Market on Main Street in Gloversville.
Micropolis Cooperative artist member, Linda Hinkle, described the work of guest artist for the months of March-April, Segan, as a 3-dimensional collage.
In his artist statement, Segan said that in his work he combines painting, sculpture and objects, fitting them spatially in boxes that he constructs.
“I paint and sculpt in a straight forward manner to best achieve harmony between the two dimensional image and the three dimensional form. The coming together of the different elements allows the work to become first image, then object, and ultimately a blending of the two. This merging allows me the role of the artist, craftsperson, and finally witness,” Segan wrote.
Hinkle said that Segan was selected as featured artist due to the unique nature of his artwork, a method that had not previously been displayed in the area.
According to Hinkle, the artist members of Micropolis try to select featured artists that will introduce members, local artists and residents to types of work that may not be available locally or regionally. She noted that Segan, a Fort Edward resident, has not shown his work in the area recently.
Hinkle pointed out that this approach not only benefits regular visitors to Micropolis who are exposed to new art forms and methods, it also draws in visitors who are attracted to the particular style on display. A recent guest artist who worked in basket weaving intrigued basketry practitioners and admirers, bringing in new faces.
Segan studied art at the Pratt Institute, graduating in 1977, although he did not start making art until 2006. During the intervening years he acquired the skills and experiences he uses in his artwork. His work has been shown regionally in solo and group exhibitions.
Segan is an active member of the arts community in the Glens Falls region, volunteering his time to galleries, museums and art groups.
The Micropolis gallery will also display works from 18 artist members of the cooperative. Work will include paintings, drawings, photographs, fiber art, batik, mixed media, woodwork, glass, digital art, sculpture, jewelry and pottery.
Segan and members of the cooperative will be on hand to interact with visitors and answer question about their work during the meet the artists reception at the Micropolis Cooperative Art Gallery on Friday from 5 to 7 p.m. The event is free to attend and refreshments will be served.
The current show, including work by the member artists and Segan, will run through April. The Micropolis features new artwork from member artists and work from a new guest artist every two months.
The gallery is located inside Mohawk Harvest Cooperative Market at 30 N. Main St. and is open seven days a week. Hours are Monday through Friday 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., Saturday 8 a.m.-5 p.m. and Sunday 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
