Man keeps officers at bay
Threatened to kill girlfriend
STRATFORD — A town man who allegedly threatened to kill his girlfriend with a gun — and was the subject of a standoff with authorities — was arrested Monday at his home on several felonies.
A Fulton County Sheriff’s Department news release said James M. Davis, 54, of 415 Avery Road, was charged with: felony counts of second-degree criminal possession of a weapon, first-degree reckless endangerment and criminal possession of a firearm; and misdemeanor counts of second-degree menacing and third-degree attempted assault.
The release said a 911 call came into Fulton County, transferred from Herkimer County, reporting an incident at 8 a.m. A female victim reported Davis, her boyfriend, pointed a handgun at her during s domestic violence incident at their town of Stratford residence.
Deputies said an arriving sheriff’s sergeant found the woman walking away from the residence with her dog. She stated Davis was intoxicated and after a verbal dispute became physically abusive towards her, striking her multiple times about the head and abdomen with a closed fist, the release said. The victim attempted to contact 911 for assistance and Davis grabbed a loaded revolver and pointed it at her, threatening to kill her.
The release said sheriff’s personnel and state police from Fonda and Mayfield responded. Officers were initially not able to make contact with Davis, with Sheriff Richard Giardino requesting state police assistance.
Negotiators from state police made contact with Davis inside the residence. The release said the suspect initially refused to leave, advising officers “would have to come in to get him.” State police’s Special Operations Response Team was called to the scene.
After an hour, negotiators successfully convinced the suspect to surrender. A handgun was recovered from the scene.
Davis was arraigned in Town Court and sent to the Fulton County Jail without bail due to multiple previous felony convictions.
Additional charges are pending conclusion of the investigation and completion of a search warrant at his residence.
