The National Shrine of St. Kateri Tekakwitha to celebrate 80th anniversary October 17
FONDA — The National Shrine of St. Kateri Tekakwitha, 3636 Route 5, will be celebrating its 80th anniversary from 6 to 9 p.m. Oct. 17, at the River Stone Manor, Glenville. The Shrine will be hosting a gala celebration honoring Bishop Edward B. Scharfenberger of Albany, according to a news release.
The Shrine began at the site in 1938, and includes buildings dating back to 1782. The Grassmann Hall was added and many other improvements through the years.
During the past 80 years, worshipers come to visit what once was an Indian village, where St. Kateri was baptized and mostly had lived.
A lot of the work and maintenence has been done with the dedicated help of the staff and volunteers.
The Shrine recently received a donation of Native American artifacts that will be archived at the museum.
