Soroptimist group completes pledge to St. Mary’s with $10,000 check

AMSTERDAM — The Soroptimist International of Fulton and Montgomery counties completed a three-year pledge to St. Mary’s Healthcare with the presentation of a check for $10,000.

Club president Cindy Close said this year’s donation completes the club’s three-year, $30,000 contribution in support of St. Mary’s Medical Imaging mammography equipment used for the detection of breast cancer, a resource predominantly used for healthcare in women.

The check was presented by Close and Club Treasurer Colleen Baldwin to Victor Giuliani, chief executive officer, St. Mary’s Healthcare, together with Dr. Peter Holtermann, director of Medical Imaging Services at St. Mary’s Healthcare, Wendy Palmer, mammography supervisor, Beth Ann Kowalski, nurse navigator, and Dr. Epifanio Militar, radiologist, according to a news release.

This year’s contribution will be used to support what is called The Magseed Project, which is “a new way to mark the location of a potential breast cancer. The new system uses a small stainless-steel marker (see) the size and shape of a grain of rice. (It) allows the seed to be placed any time prior (to) surgery for either a biopsy of a suspected breast cancer or removal of a known breast cancer. The marker is placed under mammography, ultrasound or magnetic resonance imaging guidance through a needle directly into the center of the target tissue.

The advantages of the new Magseed system are a smaller breast incision and scar, easier implantation of the marking device for the radiologist, and easier location of the target tissue for the breast surgeon. The process for the patient is easier and less stressful on the day of the surgery and can be done during the patient’s preadmission testing, the news release stated.

Soroptimist International of Fulton-Montgomery, formerly Soroptimist International of Fulton County, is in its 65th year of service to the Fulton and Montgomery County communities in its mission on behalf of women and girls, Best for Women.
