Students moving on to regionals
JOHNSTOWN — Fourteen Johnstown teams competed at the Odyssey of the Mind Regional competition held at Fonda-Fultonville on March 10 and five of them are advancing to the New York state competition at Binghamton University on April 7.
Johnstown had the largest number of students participating in Regionals of any school in the area, with seven teams from Warren Street Elementary; four teams from Knox Junior High and, competing for the first time, three teams from Glebe Street Elementary. Johnstown advisors Kristin Meashaw and Jennifer Sweeney head up the school district’s program, now in its third year, assisted by a host of parent and teacher volunteers.
The five Johnstown teams headed to state competition include the Warren Street Fourth; Fifth Grade Structure Team, coached by Rodney Rathbun; Josh Nellis; the Warren Street Fifth Grade Emoji Team, coached by Christina Laird; Corena Rising: the Warren Street Sixth Grade Structure Team, coached by Chad Kortz (due to a scoring error, this team was recognized for second place at the awards program, but wound up winning first in their problem and division); the Knox Seventh Grade Energetic Engineers Team, coached by Joe Naselli; Chris Hutchison; and the Knox Seventh Grade Robotic Renegades Team, coached by Josh Elston.
