AAUW environmental movie, vegetarian potluck meeting set

JOHNSTOWN — The Amsterdam-Gloversville-Johnstown branch of the American Association of University Women will focus on environmental awareness at its upcoming meeting at 5:30 p.m. on Jan. 10. A vegetarian potluck dinner followed by the showing of a 2016 environmental documentary will be held at the First Presbyterian Church in Johnstown.

The AAUW meeting is open to the public, but reservations are required. Attendees are asked to bring a vegetarian dish to share as well as their own plate, cup and silverware.

A $5 donation is requested to cover the cost of beverages and facility use.

January 7 is the deadline to RSVP. For more information and to make reservations call 518-705-2835. The First Presbyterian Church is located at the corner of S. Market and Clinton Streets across from the Johnstown Public Library. Those attending should enter from the Clinton St. entrance.

In preparation for the January 10 AAUW meeting, suggested readings include: Hope, Human and Wild by Bill McKibben. The book recounts McKibben’s journeys from the Adirondack Mountains to Brazil and India to profile the efforts of caring communities to preserve wilderness and reverse environmental devastation. A second suggested book is The Winona LaDuke Chronicles: Stories from the Front Lines in the Battle for Environmental Justice by Professor Winona LaDuke. It is a collection of stories of indigenous communities from the Canadian subarctic to the heart of the Navajo Nation.

Both books are available from the Johnstown Public Library under reserve for the AAUW Book Club. The AAUW branch will also be discussing these books at their upcoming Book Club meeting which will be held at the Holiday Inn at 4 pm on January 11. To attend the Book Club Meeting, contact chair Paula Lerner 518-736-2449

AAUW is open to anyone holding an associate or equivalent (ie. RN), a baccalaureate or a higher degree from a regionally accredited college or university. For more information about the Amsterdam-Gloversville-Johnstown branch of AAUW go to agj-ny.aauw.net
