Poet to be in Galway
GALWAY — Author Mary Cuffe Perez will read from her newly published book, “Barn Stories: Reflections from a Saratoga County Horse Farm,” at Galway town hall, 5910 Sacandaga Road, on Oct. 21, at 7 p.m.
The presentation will include photographs of the Saratoga County barn the stories are drawn from as well as other photos of area barns. Books will be available for sale. The event is sponsored by the Galway Public Library.
The author will also be appearing for a book signing at the Open Door Book Store, Jay Street, Schenectady on Oct. 29, from noon to 1:30 p.m.
The 39 stories in this work of creative nonfiction are drawn from the author’s 15 years managing a horse boarding business in the town of Galway. The stories follow her experiences with a struggling business and a cast of intriguing characters – both animal and human – whose lives intersect under the gable roof of a 200-year-old barn.
According to a news release, turning the first page of “Barn Stories” is like sliding open the doors to the 200-year-old barn from which the stories emanate, and breathing in the smell of hay, horses and layer upon layer of history. But the stories in this collection are not just about nostalgia, but about life — what passes through and what is harbored there, and about the communities and landscapes they are part of.
The book is published by North Country Books and includes photographs from the Adirondack photographer Mark Bowie.
Barn Stories is available on Amazon, at the Open Door Book Store, and coming soon to other locations.
