Schoharie Crossing plans Canal Days
FORT HUNTER – Schoharie Crossing will host Canal Days on July 11 and 12 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. both days.
On both days, there will be artifact identification by the New York State Archeological Association. Visitors are invited to bring in objects they have found, according to a news release.
Both days also include wagon rides, the Utica Zoomobile, a magic performance by Jim Snack, Tri County Old Time Engine display, games, food vendors and a garage sale, a news release said.
In addition, the archeological association will have a display of Native American artifacts for visitors to view and handle.
The Amsterdam Mohawks Baseball Team mascot, Mojo, will make an appearance each day. Various community organizations will participate, including the Amsterdam Library, which will do a craft project with children. The Fort Hunter Library, the Montgomery Sheriff’s Department, the Girl Scouts, the Mohawk River Basin Program, the SPCA and Forever Greyhound Adoptions will be involved.
On July 11, bluegrass band Three Quarter North and Cosby Gibson and Tom Staudle will perform. Cosby and Tom will also offer a music workshop after their performance. There will be a car show sponsored by the Rat Pack Cruizers and the Friends of Schoharie Crossing will sell barbecue chicken. Slipstream Watercraft will offer kayak demonstrations at the Boat Launch in the morning. The Kanatsiohareke Mohawk Community will sell traditional crafts.
On July 12, in addition to the weekend-long events, the program will feature the music of Annie and the Hedonists. The Gottier Family Oxen Team will give demonstrations. The Price Chopper Bounce House and Orapello’s pizza are planned.
The festival is part of an Art and History Weekend, which includes Johnson Hall’s Market Fair and the Buck Moon Arts Festival at Fulton-Montgomery Community College. There will be an Art and History Geocache Challenge with geocaches at all three locations, and there will be a shuttle traveling between the three events. Visitors will receive a passbook. Anyone who visits the events over the weekend will be eligible for a prize drawing.
