Pie contest takes place at festival

PALATINE – The Palatine Settlement Society’s annual Nellis Tavern Rhubarb Festival and open house took place June 6.

One of the notable events was the rhubarb pie contest.

Entrants submitted pies in two categories, strawberry rhubarb and plain rhubarb.

First-, second- and third-place prizes were awarded in each category, based on the opinions of the pallets of three volunteer judges.

Awarded first prize for the best-tasting strawberry rhubarb pie was Christine Brust of McKinley Road, Palatine Bridge.

Second place in this category went to Joyce Harrington of Canajoharie and the third was earned by “Liam” who baked a gluten- and dairy-free pie the judges found appealing, according to a news release.

In the plain rhubarb category, Kim Travis of Broadalbin received first prize. Second prize was awarded Carolyn Lull of St. Johnsville and third prize again went to Brust, who entered a pie in each category.
