Couple celebrates 55th anniversary

James and Barbara Blaydon of Caroga Lake recently celebrated their 55th wedding anniversary.

The former Barbara Sullivan of St. Johnsville and James E. Blaydon of Grand Island, Erie County, were married Aug. 15, 1959, at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, St. Johnsville. The Rev. Herman Bride officiated.

The couple moved to Ann Arbor, Mich., where they resumed their college studies.

Jim Blaydon accepted a national foundation grant and they moved to Corvallis, Ore., resuming their studies. A year later, the couple returned to Buffalo, Erie County, where Jim Blaydon entered the doctoral program. Barbara Blaydon accepted a federal grant position teaching art in poverty pocket schools in Niargara Falls, Niagara County. She was one of three teachers for this selection in the nation.

The following year, 1964, they each accepted positions to teach in American government schools in Kaiserslautern, Germany. Then 12 years later (and two more moves) they accepted transfers to Iwakuni, Japan, where they spent four years. They transferred again to Misawa, Japan, and the final transfer was to Tokyo.

During their 55 years, they had two siamese cats, Maxine and Shatzy, and a dog, Sam, who traveled with them.

They winter in Florida and summer in Caroga Lake.
