The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation and Adirondack Mountain Reserve (AMR) announced Tuesday that the parking reservation system to promote safe access to trails in the Route 73 corridor will resume May 1.

Hikers may start booking reservations on Wednesday. Through Oct. 31, reservations will be required for the parking lot, trailheads, and trails on AMR property. Since the launch of the parking reservation system in 2021, more than 52,500 users have registered at AMR's website to make parking reservations. AMR reservations are free to make and 70 are available per day. Users can make reservations up to two weeks in advance.

“This system improves public safety and supports equitable access and guaranteed parking for all outdoor adventurers visiting this area of unparalleled natural beauty,” DEC interim Commissioner Sean Mahar said in a statement.

Walk-in users are not permitted unless they provide a Greyhound or Trailways bus ticket from within the past 24 hours.

In 2023, the reservation system accepted 16,971 reservations. There were 2,625 reservation cancellations in 2023, and nearly all canceled reservations were rebooked.

AMR has a longstanding conservation easement with DEC that allows public access to its private properties. Additional hiking opportunities and parking lots can be found throughout the 2.6 million acres of public lands in the Adirondack Forest Preserve on a first-come, first-served basis.
